they/she

Xinyu XuXX is an artist-filmmaker and screening organiser born in Huangshan and based in London.

Raised in mountain mist, they work with ‘mist’ as both a material and a method. Moving between artists’ film, moving image, installation and writing, their practice follows images as threads to trace diasporic stories across personal and collective memory. Through non-linear structures, their work forms in-between spaces where identities drift between body, place, and time.

Xinyu is a recipient of Round 19 DYCP (Develop Your Creative Practice) funding from Arts Council England. Their work has been shown at the London Short Film Festival, Queer East Festival, Conditions Studio, Goldsmiths CCA residency space (London), Studio dB (Berlin), The Living Gallery (New York), The Art Pavilion (London), and Three Shadows Gallery (Beijing), among others.

Xinyu is the half of 水哨 Shuǐ Shào, co-organised with artist Yuqing Lin in 2023, an artist-led project exploring queer and diasporic moving image and artist film through community screenings and collaborative creative activities. 水哨 Shuǐ Shào is the guest screening curator for Queer East festival in 2024 & 2025.

Xinyu also plays as XX NAILS, a creative nail art project emerging from one of typical immigrant labour and service works, exploring the therapeutic, artistic, and expressive potential of everyday care practices, embodied intimacy.
